PROVINCIAL DEBATE TEAM, SET TO PREPARE FOR NATIONALS

JM Ntsime Secondary, Potchefstroom Secondary, Tiger Kloof Secondary and Mafikeng Combined schools met under one roof recently to debate for the first position of the Provincial team that is set to represent the Bokone Bophirima Province in the National Schools debate projects.

The Annual Schools Debate took place at the Taung Task in the Dr RSM District Municipality. This year’s debate topic was South Africa is on the course to achieve the sustainable development goal to reduce road crashes by 50% by 2020.

The debate is an annual activity where by learners from different schools debate and compete against each other to win the overall prize which is to represent their province at the Nationals. This year’s nationals are set to take place later in the year in the Eastern Cape.

‘’When all road users abide by the rules of the road, when the roads are properly maintained, when we stop texting and driving, when stop drunken driving and lastly when we always put our safety belts on the 2020 decade of action is achievable, said Kealeboga Mogorosi one of the learners from Tiger Kloof secondary School.

South Africa is working very hard to reduce road fatalities and it is up to us to work together with the government, as the saying goes working together we can achieve much more.

Road safety is taught in schools from primary up until high school, to instil the responsibility of being road ambassadors from a young age so that these young people can become responsible young adults’’, concluded the bubbly young learner.

The proposition team, Tiger Kloof Secondary won the competition after beating Mafikeng Combined School that were opposing the motion. Tiger Kloof has in 2016 represented the province at the National held in Limpopo and they obtained position 2.

Ms Motshabi Tshukudu, the Director for Road Safety in the department was happy about the overall performance of the learners. ‘’We congratulate the winners for the sterling job and encourages everyone to exercise road safety measures at all times. The department will be offering support to the winners to help them and prepare them for the nationals. Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility, we therefore as a department ask people to be cautious at all times’’.
